TRICK OF THE TRADE: Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury likes to blend pink blush high on the cheekbones, as opposed to on the apples. “It makes the flush more sophisticated,” she said.

TRICK OF THE TRADE: For a softer look, makeup artist Pat McGrath applies the color just in the center of the lips, then spreads it over the mouth with her finger so there are no hard edges.

The toughest makeup look for fall: eyes loaded with black shadow and liner, often with glittery blue, brown, or gunmetal on the lids.

TRICK OF THE TRADE: With thick black liner, makeup artist Peter Philips often skips mascara. “Leaving the lashes bare looks less retro.”

I’m always searching for new ways to achieve a sexy smoky eye look. Well, I just learned a great technique from Dara Klein, an amazing NYC makeup artist, and the best part is that it takes two minutes to pull off. The key is to use a cream or gel liner (she likes Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, Lancôme Ink Artliner, or Face Stockholm Cake Eyeliner), instead of a regular pencil since they blend really easily, which is crucial when creating a smoky eye. Here’s how to work with these formulas:

1. First, dip a small stiff brush into the liner and smudge on back of hand

2. Sketch the brush into lash line quickly as these tend to dry fast

3. Use tip of ring finger and gently smudge up onto lid.

4. If you want a more dramatic effect rim your lower lash lines as well.

1. Brush your brows upward, then use brow scissors to snip just the very ends of any long hairs and repeat brushing downward, says eyebrow pro Ramy Gafni. Trimming the hair before tweezing will reveal the brow shape and remove the weight and bulk so that you can create an ideal shape.

2. Begin by holding a pencil parallel to the side of the bridge of your nose. The inner edge of your brows should start here. To determine the highest point of your arch, place the pencil parallel to the outside corner of your iris. Angling the pencil diagonally from your nostril to the outside corner of your eye will tell you where your brow should end. Another foolproof way to locate your arch: “Look at your face straight on in the mirror and find the highest

point of your brow. Tweeze directly below it for a perfectly placed arch,” says Gafni.

3. Mark the spots you just mapped out with a brow pencil, then begin tweezing or waxing accordingly. Remove no more than two rows of hair to maintain a natural effect. You may also need to remove just a few hairs from the top of the outer edges to create a subtle downward slope. If you have thick brows and want a more dramatic arch, remove an additional row from under the peak of the brow to create a more pronounced arch and to keep it from appearing straight and flat.
